You’re sitting on a mountain of discovery and may not even know it. Have you tested with AncestryDNA™, 23andMe©, or MyHeritage™? If the answer is yes, you’re eligible to transfer your results to FamilyTreeDNA for free! If the answer is no, we’re okay with that too.
As of very recently, we’ve opened up our database to newer files from both 23andMe© (V5) and AncestryDNA™ (V2). On top of that, if you have older versions of their results, you can still transfer those too! Here’s a full list of companies and file types we accept:
- 23andMe© V3
- 23andMe© V4
- 23andMe© V5
- AncestryDNA™ V1
- AncestryDNA™ V2
- MyHeritage™
Where Do I Start?
So you’ve journeyed through endless pages on DNA and genealogy and have stumbled across this article. That’s a great place to be! If you have taken a test with AncestryDNA™, 23andMe©, or MyHeritage™ and also don’t have Family Finder results with us, we strongly recommend transferring. At the very least, this opens up your connections to a new database, and a new group of genetic relatives. If you don’t already have a kit with us, start your transfer here: DNA Data Upload Page. This will first prompt you to enter a little bit of info (Name, Email Address).
If you already have a kit (account) with us, to transfer via the link above, click the orange Already have a Family Tree DNA account? link from that page. This will prompt you to sign in to your kit. Once in, select Add Ons & Upgrades from the very top-right corner of your page. From there, scroll down to the Autosomal Transfers option.
From here, the screen will prompt you to upload your file from the other company by dragging it into a box or by searching for it on your computer. Complete instructions can be found here: Autosomal Transfer FAQ
I Did It!
You’ve just uploaded your file. Feels pretty good, right? From here, you should be able to click the Matches link from your Family Finder menu to view all the new matches you now have. It’s important to note that while this feature is completely free, you will then now be given the option to unlock complete results for $19. If you decide to take advantage of this option, you will also receive myOrigins percentages (your ethnicity estimate), your ancientOrigins report (your ancient European origins), and the Chromosome Browser (an advanced tool that allows you to see on exactly which segments of each chromosome you match each relative).
No Matches?
Since we recently opened up transfers to newer file types from different companies, there may be a small delay in your matches showing up. We’re in the final stretch, so if you are affected by this, while we are very sorry, you should have results shortly. Matches may take 5-7 business days to process and show up in your matches list.
If you have any issues, please contact Customer Support at 713-868-1438. Our phones are open Mon-Fri 9-5 pm (CST). You can also email us through our web form or Live Chat with one of our agents (during business hours) here: Contact Us
