Hey, it happens.<\/p>\n<p>Or maybe I\u2019ll just say I was slow. That sounds a lot better, right?<\/p>\n<p>See, I\u2019ve been <strong>a FamilyTreeDNA customer for 20 years and a MyHeritage customer for 14 years<\/strong>, so I\u2019ve had family trees on both platforms for a long time. And when the two companies announced their partnership last year, enabling a <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.familytreedna.com\/myheritage-brings-family-tree-tools-to-familytreedna\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FamilyTreeDNA tree transfer to MyHeritage<\/a>, I said, \u201cWell, I\u2019ll get to that eventually. <strong>As a long time user of both platforms, there\u2019s no real rush<\/strong> for me.\u201d So I put it off. And then put it off again.<\/p>\n<h2>My FamilyTreeDNA Tree Transfer Was Easier Than I Expected<\/h2>\n<p>I finally got around to transferring my tree. And <strong>I wish I had done it sooner<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I elected to complete my <a href=\"https:\/\/help.familytreedna.com\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/9698673639439\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FamilyTreeDNA tree transfer to MyHeritage<\/a><\/strong> rather than just link the two, and it went smoothly for me. I know a small percentage of people have had technical issues with the transfer, but I also know (now from personal experience) that the two companies have worked hard to address those\u2014so <strong>if you did have issues originally, please either try again or follow up<\/strong> with whichever customer service you reported the issue to. It\u2019s worth it.<\/p>\n<h2>MyHeritage Offers Additional Family Tree Features That I Overlooked<\/h2>\n<p>When the tree integration was first announced, people talked, of course, about the additional features available at MyHeritage for family trees, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/education.myheritage.com\/article\/what-smart-matches-are-and-how-to-make-the-most-of-them\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Smart Matches<\/a>: <strong>Connect with relatives<\/strong> by finding matching individuals in other MyHeritage family trees and expand your research with shared information.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/education.myheritage.com\/article\/introduction-to-record-matches\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Record Matches<\/a>: <strong>Discover and verify ancestors<\/strong> by reviewing automatically matched historical records, such as birth, marriage, and census documents.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myheritage.com\/help-center?a=What-are-the-MyHeritage-Tree-Views-and-how-can-they-be-useful-for-me---id--evCoI3g0St-LaCPHBKk32Q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MyHeritage Tree Views<\/a>: <strong>Explore your family tree in multiple visual formats<\/strong>, including Pedigree, Fan, and List views, to better understand relationships and navigate your research more easily.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/education.myheritage.com\/article\/keep-your-family-tree-accurate-with-the-tree-consistency-checker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Consistency Checker<\/a>: <strong>Identify and fix potential errors<\/strong> in your family tree, such as incorrect dates, duplicate entries, and missing relationships, to ensure your research stays accurate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Those are very real benefits and good tools I have used for some time. If you didn\u2019t have a tree there before, you will have some fun with those.<\/p>\n<h2>Testing at Multiple DNA Companies Provides More Insights<\/h2>\n<p><strong>I am an advocate for testing with as many different companies as you can<\/strong>, and if you have tested with both FamilyTreeDNA and MyHeritage, the integration is even more powerful.<\/p>\n<p>In the past I have linked many of my FamilyTreeDNA matches to my family tree (i.e \u201cbucketing\u201d aka <a href=\"https:\/\/help.familytreedna.com\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/4413996181391\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Family Matching<\/a>), but <strong>with 3848 autosomal matches<\/strong> in my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.familytreedna.com\/products\/family-finder\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Family Finder<\/a> results, <strong>I haven\u2019t made much more than a dent in the number of distant matches<\/strong> that have been assigned to my paternal vs. maternal side.<\/p>\n<h2>Transferring My Tree Helped Me Identify New Family Connections<\/h2>\n<p>Well, after <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.myheritage.com\/2024\/07\/new-collaboration-with-familytreedna\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">I transferred my tree over to MyHeritage<\/a>, I was looking through my DNA matches on MyHeritage, and <strong>I noticed something I missed before\u2014two of my 3rd-4th cousin Family Finder matches have also tested with MyHeritage<\/strong>, and they have trees on MyHeritage but didn\u2019t have a tree on FamilyTreeDNA!<\/p>\n<p>I had missed that connection before (partly because these two matches hadn\u2019t responded to inquiries, so I had put them aside). But more importantly, <strong>they happened to be matches that I hadn\u2019t managed to link yet<\/strong> on the FamilyTreeDNA platform.<\/p>\n<p>Ok so I\u2019m not only wrong and slow, but also apparently not very thorough.<\/p>\n<h2>Linking Just One Match Helped Sort 32 More Distant Matches<\/h2>\n<p>You can probably guess where this is going, but yes, <strong>their family trees helped me build out their place in my MyHeritage family tree, and I was able to link them over in my FamilyTreeDNA matches<\/strong>. They both landed over on my paternal side.<\/p>\n<p>If that was the end of it, then I could at least have some satisfaction that the integration helped me better organize two more of my matches. But <strong>there were some unintended benefits too<\/strong>\u2014with Family Matching, <strong>linking one of the two matches bucketed another 32 of my distant matches<\/strong> over to my paternal side.<\/p>\n<h2>I Identified My Great-Great-Grandmother\u2019s mtDNA Haplogroup<\/h2>\n<p><strong>The other match is a woman who descends in a direct maternal line<\/strong> from one of my great-great-grandmothers, and she\u2019s also taken <a href=\"https:\/\/www.familytreedna.com\/products\/mt-dna\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an mtDNA test<\/a> with FamilyTreeDNA; so now (assuming no surprises of course, over the intervening generations) I know <strong>the mtDNA haplogroup of my great-great-grandmother<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<h2>What I Learned from This Experience<\/h2>\n<p>So I thought I already knew both companies\u2019 platforms and that the tree integration wasn\u2019t going to help me much.
